My Top 10 Self-Help Books

I love a good self-help book and decided to post about my favourites because I feel like they have really helped me grow over the past few years and hopefully they can do the same for you.

1. You Can Heal Your Life- Louise Hay
This is the first book I ever bought in terms of 'self-help'. I actually decided to read this after a friend's recommendation, claiming she was a 'new woman' after reading. The message of the book is really that we are all in control of our reality and that everything that happens is a result of thoughts and patterns, including 'dis-ease'. She includes positive affirmations and exercises to improve all areas of life e.g. relationships, work, body etc. and also describes her personal experiences and how she overcame them.

2. May Cause Miracles- Gabrielle Bernstein
This is a "6-week kick-start to unlimited happiness", a 42-day guide to change your life. Over the 42 days, Gabrielle offers exercises, affirmations and prayers to change our thinking and actions through subtle shifts in order to live a miraculous life. It focuses on all aspects of daily life and offers an exciting plan through releasing fear and allowing gratitude, forgiveness and love to flow through us.

3. The Power- Rhonda Bryne
I love this book and have probably read it over 20 times.'The Power' states that every discovery, invention and human creation comes from The Power (love). "Perfect health, incredible relationships, a career you love, a life filled with happiness, and the money you need to be, do and have everything you want all comes from The Power. The life of your dreams has been closer to you than you realized, because The Power- to have everything good in your life- is inside you."

4. Ask and It Is Given- Esther and Jerry Hicks
This is by far the best book I have read in terms of the Law of Attraction and manifesting your desires. 'Ask and It Is Given' provides the teachings of the non-physical entity, Abraham, to help you to learn how to manifest your desires in order to live the life that you truly want and deserve. It offers "22 powerful processes to help change the way you look at things, and as you do so the things you look at change."

5. Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway- Susan Jeffers
In this book Susan offers dynamic techniques and concepts to help you grab hold of your fears and move forward in your life. "Inside 'Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway' you'll learn what we are afraid of... and why and the five surprising truths about fear. You'll also learn how to let go of victim mentality, the secret of making 'no lose' decisions, how to expand your 'comfort' zone, how to create more meaning in your life and much more. With understanding and humor, Susan shows you how to become powerful in the face of your fears and enjoy the elation of living a more creative, joyous, and loving life."

6. Tao of Pooh- Benjamin Hoff
This book is an introduction to the belief of Taoism. It employs Winnie the Pooh stories to explain the basic principles of philosophical Taoism. "Hoff uses many of Milne's characters to symbolize ideas that differ from or accentuate Taoist tenets. Winnie the Pooh himself, for example, personifies the principles of wei wu wei, the Taoist concept of "effortless doing," and pu, the concept of being open but unburdened by experience. In contrast, characters like Owl and Rabbit over-complicate problems, often over-thinking to the point of confusion, and Eyore pessimistically complains and frets about existence, unable to just be. Hoff regards Pooh's simpleminded nature, unsophisticated worldview and instinctive problem-solving methods as conveniently representative of the Taoist philosophical foundation."

7. The Power of Now- Eckhart Tolle
The Power of Now offers the simple message that living in the now is the truest path to happiness. "To make the journey into the Now we will need to leave our analytical mind and its false created self, the ego, behind." Eckhart uses a question and answer format to guide you through the book, and is today considered "one of those rare books with the power to create an experience in readers, one that can radically change their lives for the better."

8. Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus- John Gray
In my eyes this book is a must-buy for understanding the opposite sex better and having a happier and more fulfilled relationship. John suggests that men and women are as different as beings from other planets, and discusses every aspect of relationships and offers practical examples and guides to understand and communicate in a more effective way.

9. Miracles Now- Gabrielle Bernstein
In this book Gabrielle offers 108 life-changing tools for less stress, more flow and finding your true purpose. "Inspired by some of the greatest spiritual teachings, these practical, moment-to-moment tools will help you eliminate blocks and live with more ease. They're powerful, life-changing meditations and principles, modernized and brown down into easy-to-digest techniques to fit your lifestyle."

10. The Star Qualities- Caroline Goyder
This book aims to improve self-confidence, give you presence and boost your self-esteem, with help and advice from A-list stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren. "Real star quality is about trusting yourself. With this invaluable guide you will learn how to shine in any situation."
